Sugar can be hard to reduce in your diet. I know because I used to be a sugar addict. We all realize that too much sugar is bad for our health. This is not only because it makes you gain weight, but also because it can lead to heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, and even dementia.

How do you stop craving sweets?

I learned these tips from my own experience of being addicted to sugar, as well as from the experiences and struggles of my clients.

  1. Read food labels very carefully. Start with the list of ingredients. Keep in mind that ingredients are listed in descending order by weight. The main ingredient is always listed first, followed by other ingredients which are included in smaller amounts. Above all, try to avoid foods that have a lot of sugar, especially added sugar.
  2. Watch what you drink! One of the easiest ways to have too much sugar is by drinking a lot of sugary liquids.
  3. Substitute your white sugar with natural sugar. One way you can do this is by using good sugar, such as honey brown sugar or maple syrup.
  4. Eat more protein! When you don’t eat enough protein in your meals, your blood sugar can become imbalanced and lead to strong sugar cravings.
  5. Eat more healthy fats in your diet, such as avocado, nuts, seeds, or coconuts. Eating a sufficient amount of fats will help prevent sugar cravings.
  6. Make sure to include low-sugar snacks on your grocery list, so you can always have these available at home. When you have easy access to low-sugar snacks, you will be much more likely to eat them. On the contrary, if you keep high-sugar snacks at home, you are going to end up eating them! We always eat what is available!
  7. Add more fruits to your diet. Sugar in natural food is not a problem because they have fibers, a lot of vitamins, and minerals intact.

Try not to seek perfection with these tips. It is ok to break the rules from time to time. 

The most important thing is to do the best you can on a consistent basis. This will help you achieve incredible results, while still allowing you to cheat on occasion.
